Motorsports at Charlotte in an official capacity began to take shape in the early 1990s. Around 1997, 49ers Racing FSAE was created and gave students the opportunity to start building formula racecars. Ever since the students have tried to build a car to compete every year. Coming out of COVID, the team found success in a complete rebuild of the team. This rebuild resulted in a 25th to 2nd place finish over the course of three years.
